What digital literacy is

Module 1 — Living with computers · What digital literacy is

What digital literacy is

General · Learn → Example → Practice → Check

What you will learn

  • Accounts and files are skills
  • Safety is part of literacy
  • Not the same as programming

What will you learn?

Owning a phone is not the same as using it safely for study, shop work and government sites.

The core idea

Digital literacy is the set of habits that let you create an account, save a file, send a clear message, judge a website, and recover when something breaks. It sits after computer fundamentals: you already know input-process-output; now you practise daily tasks without guessing.

Key points

  • Accounts and files are skills
  • Safety is part of literacy
  • Not the same as programming

Example

A student who can rename a PDF, attach it to email, and refuse a fake scholarship link is digitally literate. A student who only watches reels is not.

Caution

• Confusing 'I have WhatsApp' with file and email skills • Calling any website 'the government site' because it looks official

Try this

  1. List three tasks you must do on a computer this month (file, message, website).

Practice

List three tasks you must do on a computer this month (file, message, website).

Question 1

Digital literacy mainly means…

Summary

Literacy is practised tasks plus judgement, not hardware price.

Summary

Literacy is practised tasks plus judgement, not hardware price.
