Artificial Intelligence kya hai?
AI / ML · Concept → Architecture → Example → Visual → Practice
What you will learn
- AI = systems that perform tasks we'd call intelligent if a human did them
- AI is an umbrella term, not one algorithm
- Still follows input → processing → output, just with learned/complex processing
What will you learn?
Every other lesson in this course assumes you can tell the difference between a normal calculator and a system that behaves intelligently. Without this line drawn clearly, terms like 'machine learning' and 'generative AI' stay confusing buzzwords.
The core idea
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the field of building computer systems that can perform tasks which, if a human did them, we would call intelligent — recognising a face, understanding a sentence, recommending a movie, or writing a paragraph. AI is not one single algorithm; it is an umbrella term for many techniques (rules, statistics, machine learning, deep learning) that produce this intelligent-seeming behaviour. Practically, an AI system still follows input → processing → output, exactly like traditional software, but the 'processing' step is built from patterns learned from data or complex rule sets, not a fixed formula a programmer typed by hand for every case.
Key points
- AI = systems that perform tasks we'd call intelligent if a human did them
- AI is an umbrella term, not one algorithm
- Still follows input → processing → output, just with learned/complex processing
- AI capability ≠ AI consciousness — a chatbot answering well is not 'thinking' like a human
Tip
Whenever someone says 'this is AI', ask: is the output produced by a fixed formula a person wrote, or by patterns learned from data that can change the answer as data changes? That one question resolves most AI-vs-not-AI confusion.
Simple path
Input (data/question) → Processing (rules or learned patterns) → Output (decision/answer) → Looks intelligent to a human observer
- 1. Input (data/question)
- 2. Processing (rules or learned patterns)
- 3. Output (decision/answer)
- 4. Looks intelligent to a human observer
Example
A spam filter reads an email (input), checks patterns it learned from thousands of past spam/non-spam emails (processing), and marks it Spam or Inbox (output). A human would call spotting spam 'using judgement' — the filter approximates that judgement statistically, without actually understanding the email the way you do.
Real-world scenario
Traditional software vs an AI feature in the same app
A shop billing app has two features: (1) 'Add 18% GST to the total' — this is traditional software: a fixed formula, total × 0.18, always the same answer for the same input. (2) 'Suggest which products this customer usually buys together' — this is an AI feature: it looks at past purchase patterns and predicts, and its answer can change as more data comes in, without anyone rewriting the formula.
Caution
• Assuming any automated feature is 'AI' — a fixed formula (like GST calculation) is traditional software, not AI • Assuming AI understands things the way humans do, just because its output sounds fluent or confident
Try this
- List three apps or tools you used this week that show AI-like behaviour, and for each one write what the 'intelligent-seeming' task actually is (e.g. suggesting a word while typing, recognising your face to unlock a phone).

Question 1
Which statement best describes what 'Artificial Intelligence' means in this course?
Summary
AI is an umbrella term covering many techniques that produce intelligent-seeming behaviour. It is not one algorithm, and today's AI systems (including generative AI) are not conscious — they process patterns, they do not 'think' or 'feel' the way humans do.
